Remember "Candles?" Here are 14 rules to remember when burning regular candles!

I was wandering around the internet, as I'm prone to do, and I came across a website that was sharing their rules for burning their candles.  For reasons that are going to be obvious, the name of the website is withheld, but for those of us enjoying the many positive aspects of our Scentsy Products, I think you will find the following interesting.  Now remember, folks, THESE RULES DO NOT APPLY TO SCENTSY PRODUCTS!  And forgive me, but I just HAVE to highlight and comment on some of these "points".
  1. Burn your candles a maximum of 3 to 4 hours for best performance (I enjoy Scentsy 24/7 and nothing is "burning")
  2. Never burn your candles unattended! (I never worry about leaving the house with my Scentsy warmer on - there's no flame!)
  3. Trim the wick so the length does not exceed ¼" - if the wick is longer, it will cause the candle to burn hotter and hotter (YIKES! "Hotter and Hotter?" And, they have to measure and trim the wick before burning? Sounds like a lot of work to me.)
  4. Our candles use 2 cotton wicks instead of 1 for more complete combustion  (I don't know about you, but I don't want anything "combustable" in my home)
  5. For maximum performance from your votives, burn them in a snug glass votive holder - don't just place them on a plate or other surface or they will collapse and not burn for long at all!  ("collapse and not burn long" - yeah, I vaguely remember those days when unattended candles would collapse on one side and dribble all over the counter top)
  6. Drafts in a room that are created from ceiling fans, high-traffic areas or counter/floor fans can and will change their performance! For best results do not burn the candles in areas where there are strong drafts.  (OK, I'll give them this one.  I do notice that the warmer in my dining room hardens on top when the ceiling fan is on occasionally, but when I turn the fan off we are back in business with Scentsy)
  7. Our candles are manufactured above standard acceptable flash points on all candles - period!  (I don't even know what a candle "flash point" is, but it sounds frightening - period!)
  8. The candles flame height should be between ½" and ¾" - no more! If your flame is higher than ¾", you need to either trim the wick or blow the candle out and start over at a later time.  (But, I want fragrance now - not "at a later time.")
  9. If your candle flame is too low and you are not getting a complete wax pool, you can pour out some of the wax pool to allow the flame size to increase and burn hotter and thus, more completely (Do you remember pouring hot wax out of the jars?  Do you remember what it feels like when you spill that hot wax on your hand or what a mess it makes on the furniture?)
  10. A little wax left on the inside of the jar as the candle burns down is really ideal because that means the candle is not burning too hot. (As I recall, more than a little wax gets left in the jar, which is then thrown away - not recycled!)
  11. Please note that wicks do NOT burn down with the candle - they must be trimmed
  12. The wicks are the single most important aspect to any candle (I think I better send this guy a Scentsy catalog!) and they MUST be maintained and trimmed when necessary because all parts of the candle get absorbed and released through the wick! (If you plan to burn an old-fashioned candle, you may want to write #8 thru #11 down, 'cause that darn wick requires ALOT of attention.)
  13. Our candles are not "soot-free" - they are "low-soot" or if you prefer, "90% soot-free". The wax we use is a proprietary blend of all-natural renewable materials, but not the fragrance oils. Since there is approximately 10% fragrance oil in our candles (which may produce a very small amount of soot), they cannot be classified as 100% soot-free - no candle can unless there is no fragrance oil in it (Unscented) or if it uses all-natural fragrance oils (which don't smell good). (Huh? - They are blaming the "soot" on the fragrance oils?  Hmmm, Scentsy doesn't have that problem)
  14. The other question I get asked a lot is whether or not we use essential oils in our candles - the answer is no. We use only the highest quality fragrance oils from the world's leading fragrance companies and spare no expense to give you the most realistic and incredibly smelling candle in the world! (Well, I haven't smelled their candles, but I don't see how they can smell better that any of Scentsy's 80 scents!)
I'm sorry if this email is too long.  I hope you read it though, because it sure makes the point that candles are messy, dangerous, and require a lot "trimming" apparently.  Now here are the instructions for our Scentsy warmers.
  1. Put lightbulb in Scentsy warmer
  2. Plug in Scentsy warmer and turn switch to ON
  3. Put 1 or 2 Scentsy fragrance filled wax cubes in the warming dish on top
  4. Put your feet up, grab a book or magazine, relax and enjoy!  Oh, and repeat as often as you'd like - "No Muss" "No Fuss" - that's how our Scentsys work.
